Viking Invasion of Craggaunowen

Brace yourselves as the Vikings are back to storm the gates and invade Craggaunowen on Saturday May 4th and Sunday May 5th.

Join us for an unforgettable adventure and immerse yourself in the thrill of battle on the castle green, learn about traditional hunting and fishing methods, meet the Vikings and hold real medieval weapons.

Viking Battles

Daily at 11.00am, 12.30pm, 2.00pm and 3.30pm

Several battles will take place during the day with warring warriors unleashing their fierce battle skills for visitors to witness. Fighting is expected to be hot and heavy but unlike historic battles of yesteryear there will be no blood spilt.

Battles will take place at 11.00am, 12.30pm, 2.00pm and 3.30pm daily on the Castle Green with each battle lasting approximately 15 to 20 minutes.

Kids shield drills will take place after battles.

Authentic Viking Crafters

In addition to the fierce Viking Battles, these pagan warriors will be demonstrating exactly how they lived during the Viking age. Step back in time and take a trip through the Viking Village where the historically accurate tents act as workshops for crafters. 

Witness the Vikings demonstrating their many skills and crafts which include pottery, leather working, armory, trading, hunting and fishing skills, fiber crafts and much more.

Ancestral Cooking Practices

It may surprise you to learn that the Vikings were also enthusiastic about cooking. Visitors will get to see cooking demonstrations using only authentic ingredients that the Vikings would have had access to. See how and what our viking ancestors eat and experience the smells and sounds of the food cooking over an open fire.

Fun for all ages

There will also be plenty of kid friendly, Viking themed games to keep little ones entertained and enthralled over the course of the weekend. From Knubb, a very old Viking game known as "throwing logs" to Hnefatafl, a Viking game akin to modern day chess to kids shield drills.

The Viking Moneyer

Onsite visitors are invited to pay a visit to the Viking Moneyer.
Learn of the origins of coins, how they were introduced to Ireland by the Vikings and see how money was made by hand.

As a trusted artisan, the moneyer played a crucial role in maintaining the economic stability of their community. These skilled craftsmen were responsible for minting coins, often adorned with intricate designs.
